Doggone Safe Calendar
Doggone Safe (thanks to Lynn Townley) produced an extremely popular calendar in 2005 that won the award for Best Calendar from the Dog Writer's Association of America. This calendar showed two pictures of the same dog on each page. One photo showed the dog in a happy or calm emotional state and one in a serious or anxious state. The purpose of this was to demonstrate the contrast to children so that they would learn that a dog has different emotions and sometimes is not in the mood to meet them or interact with them.
The calendar is out of production due to lack of a sponsor, but we think it is a valuable teaching aid and so we have posted the pictures here. Look at this with your kids and see if they can guess which is the safe dog in each picture.
Many people find the comparison of different emotional states in the same dog very useful for teaching kids that dogs have feelings too. Sometimes nice dogs are just not in the mood to interact with kids. For more of this type of comparison check out the Flashcards Kit and Flashcards eBook at the
Additional Resources page. The free demo shows more same dog comparisons.
